How to Actually Build a 3-Day Emergency Kit

8/25/2026 · LifeHack OS Team

A practical, room-by-room checklist for a 72-hour kit that won't sit unused for a decade. Start with what you already own.

Start with what you have

You probably own 70% of a kit already. The goal is to gather and containerize, not buy a bucket.

Water — 1 gallon per person per day

  • 3 gallons per person minimum.
  • Rotate every 6 months.

Food — non-perishable, ready-to-eat

  • Canned beans, nut butter, granola bars.
  • A manual can opener (the most-forgotten item).

Go-bag essentials

  • Flashlight + extra batteries
  • First-aid kit
  • Copies of IDs and insurance
  • Cash in small bills
  • Phone charger + power bank

Rotate yearly

Pick a recurring date — daylight saving, a birthday — to check expiry and refresh water. A kit you maintain is the only kit that works.
